The Gujarat University at ahmedabad is the statewide institution affiliating many reputed colleges across the state of Gujarat, India. It has been given a B++ ranking by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). It is one of the best and most versatile higher education institutions in India. Also, it is one of the largest university systems in the subcontinent with over 224,000 students on its campus and at various affiliated colleges. It is particularly well known for its Medical, Engineering & Technology, Pharmacy, Commerce and Management colleges. The university runs sectoral/specific program in Port Management, Nano Technology, Tissue Culture.
The Gujarat University was conceived in the nineteen twenties in the minds of public-spirited and learned men like Gandhiji, Sardar Patel, Acharya Anandshankar B. Dhruva, Dada Saheb Mavlankar, Kasturbhai Lalbhai and many others. However, the University could come into existence only after the achievement of independence. In 1949, the University was incorporated under the Gujarat University Act of the State Government ‘as a teaching and affiliating University.’ This was done as a measure of decentralisation and reorganization of University education in the then Province of Bombay.
During the course of its life, the University has seen the establishment of more Universities which were carved out of the jurisdiction of the Gujarat University, viz., Sardar Patel University, Saurashtra University, Bhavnagar University, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Gujarat Ayurveda University, Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kachchh University, Navsari Agricultural University, Junagadh Agricultural University, Anand Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Dharmsinh Desai University, Nirma University of Science & Technology, Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University and Gujarat Technological University, Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, Ganpat University,Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya,Pandit Dindayal Petroleum University,Ahmedabad University ICFAI University and Navrachana University. Even then, the Gujarat University is the largest university in the state catering to the needs of higher education of more than 200,000 students scattered over more than 235 colleges, 15 recognised institutions and 24 approved institutions.
There are more than 34 Post-Graduate University departments and 221 P.G. Centres. Gujarat University is an affiliating University at the under-graduate level, while it is a teaching one at the post-graduate level. Indeed, the responsibility for post-graduate instruction has been statutorily given to the University, and accordingly it has evolved a plan of co-ordinated instruction under the direct control and supervision of the University so as to ensure efficient and diversified instruction. An important feature of this University is the system of external examinations in the Faculties of Arts and Commerce, both and under-graduate and post-graduate levels. The external examinations were introduced with a view to enabling working students and the others who could not afford the high cost of university education to realize their dream. Gujarat University has developed phenomenally since its inception to be recognized as a premier University in the country today. It provides education in one of the widest range of disciplines to more than about 200,000 students.
Gujarat University's Campuse & Juridiction Gujarat university's sparkling 260 acres (1.1 km2) main campus is located in Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad city. The Gujarat University campus is not bound at one location, rather it is spread across the entire city of Ahmedabad and its colleges and institutes are spread across districts of Ahmedabad, Kaira (excluding the limits of Vallabh Vidyanagar in Anand Taluka and the area with a radius of 5 miles (8.0 km) from the office of Sardar Patel University), Panchmahals, Sabarkantha, Banaskantha (excluding Abu Road Taluka which forms part of the State of Rajasthan) and Vadodara (excluding the area comprising the city of Vadodara and territories within a radius of 10 miles (16 km) from the office of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda). The university has more than 250 affiliated colleges and 15 recognized institutions.
